It's your call on home phone bills - telegraph.co.uk article

Emma Lunn discovers there is no simple solution to finding the cheapest supplier of home phone bill.

Customers have more choice than ever when it comes to selecting their home phone provider. Traditional operators such as BT now face competition from indirect carriers such as OneTel and Carphone Warehouse's Talk Talk.

These providers use an existing BT line but charge different rates for calls. Customers simply have to plug in a box provided by their company to redirect calls.

There are also a growing number of "prefix" phone companies, which require customers to dial a number before every call.

All have varying standing charges, plus different rates for calls to national, local, mobile and international numbers. Of course, customers also have to factor in what time of day they make the majority of these calls - the cheapest provider for evening calls may not offer such a good deal to callers who use the phone at peak time.

Finding the best deal is no easy task. There are a number of online or telephone comparison services designed to help you source the cheapest providers. So, the Sunday Telegraph decided to test the two most popular sites - uSwitch.com and Simplyswitch.com. Our search was for the best deals for someone making up to 10 local and national calls at any time of the day. The recommendations were remarkably different.

Only two suppliers - First Telecom and Tele2 - made it into the top five on the two sites. Both agreed First Telecom was the cheapest provider. But whereas uSwitch recommended VarTec Telecom in second place, estimating it would save a customer £104.63 on an estimated annual bill of £379.61, this service was rated in 45th place by Simplyswitch - which claimed it would cost an additional £114.72 a year.

An investigation last year showed similar discrepancies in recommendations for gas and electricity suppliers. Although differences may be partly explained by the questions asked by the different sites, this hardly seems sufficient to explain such varying results.

Does VarTec save you money or not? After all, both quotes were based on the same basic information.

Neither of the companies concerned offers a detailed explanation. Chris Williams of uSwitch says he cannot be responsible for the results displayed by other comparison sites. But he points out that uSwitch is the only comparison site to be awarded Ofcom accreditation.

Karen Darby, the chief executive of Simple Switch, says each site has to make assumptions about calling patterns and this can influence the results, with different sites making different assumptions. "Calling patterns will vary," she says, "and we had to make decisions about the system we use to make it as simple a process as possible."

WWF joins first:telecom to change their telecoms environment

WWF, the world's largest and most experienced independent conservation organisation has awarded first:telecom a two-year contract to provide telephony and data services across the UK.

WWF Director of IT, David Southern comments - "our telecoms services are a vital resource that enables us to carry out our conservation work. The choice for us was therefore an important one. We needed a solution that would help us reduce our costs without sacrificing the quality of the service. First:telecom has met both of these criteria and we are delighted with our decision."

About first:telecom
First:telecom was one of the first operators in the UK to provide customers with better value than BT. Since 1994 we've been constantly delivering high quality services at the same time as driving down prices. Services are delivered in the UK using a combination of Carrier Pre-Selection and leased lines.
